When it comes to winning on TikTok shop, half of the battle comes from choosing the right products. Sure, it’s easy to grab half of the contents of your bathroom cabinet and hit the ground running — but there’s also a better way.
Learning how to find profitable products on TikTok Shop is a sure fire way to boost your earnings exponentially.
While filming with products you already own is a great way to get started, it’s not scalable. If you’re looking to really grow your revenue, you need a more strategic approach to product selection.
Lucky for you, we’re laying out our exact approach to finding solid TikTok shop products in today’s article.
Why does product selection matter on TikTok shop?
One approach to TikTok shop has creators selecting products based on what they would buy themselves — personal preference. Now, if you’re an influencer with an engaged audience, this makes sense. You lead the way, you influence. But, for 99% of affiliates on TikTok, this won’t be the case.
Most affiliates don’t have an engaged audience that will buy into what they're selling. This means taking a different approach.
Tapping into non-followers interested in specific products via the algorithm.
So, how does that work?
How to choose a winning product on TikTok shop
It’s easy to complicate finding a winning product on TikTok shop. But really, it’s as simple as V-R-I-C. Let’s break it down.
V - Virality
R - Ratings
I - Inventory
C - Credibility
Virality
Here’s the kicker. You want to find a product that is already selling. Don’t worry about being too late to the party, just look for signs that there is a ton of demand.
By doing this, you essentially position your video as a retargeting ad.
TikTok is incentivised to make sales happen. If a user has watched a few videos about FS Greens but never quite made it over the line at check-out, the algorithm is going to continue to serve them with FS Greens content until they make the leap.
By choosing a product that is already trending, you tap into this sweet spot of hitting an audience that is already aware, maybe even tempted. Your video might be the one that tips them over the edge.
Ratings
You want both a product with both a high product rating AND a seller rating. Two reasons for this:
Conversion rates
61% of shoppers go through reviews before making a purchase on a “normal” website — on a new, less trusted platform like TikTok shop, that number will be higher. Scan the reviews and check the product rating. You only win if the sale goes through — if the viewer doesn’t trust the seller (or the product) enough to part with their hard earned cash, your effort is wasted.
Video reach
TikTok has stated in their policy that their algorithm system favors videos promoting highly rated products and sellers. If you want to maximize the views of your TikTok shop videos, you’re looking for a seller rating above 4, and a product rating above 4. 4.5’s are even better.
Inventory
Let’s say you find a viral product with a great seller, a price tag of $15 and 20% commission rate. Looks good, right? Maybe not… they’ve only got 200 units in stock.
If the best case scenario happens and you have a viral video that sells out their stock, you’re making $600 max (if you’re the only creator also selling the product). Once that inventory sells out, your video is still there, but no one can purchase. You can’t earn commissions and your hands are tied until the brand restocks.
You can’t always control this, but you can be conscious of how much inventory there is to play with before you start pushing a product.
Credibility
The product should already have a whole host of social proof given that it’s already viral… at this point, you’re looking for product credibility.
You’re scanning for any red flags that would stop a potential customer from getting over the final hurdle.
Let's say it's a piece of furniture but the listing does not give dimensions... red flag.
A supplement that boosts energy but there are no ingredients… red flag.
A shipping cost of $7.99 or 30-day delivery timeframe. Red flags.
Put yourself in the shoes of the buyer and ask if there’s anything that would stop you from purchasing.
