If your views are down for TikTok Shop content, you might just be choosing the wrong product.

Let’s be real for a second — for every single product-based video that pops off on TikTok, there’s another 100 that fail to hit the mark. Whilst many creators can objectively look at their content and see why it failed to do well, even more are stumped.

The video was engaging. It utilized hooks, it solved a problem and ultimately it entertained an audience. But still, it failed to surpass 100 views on an account that normally reaches tens of thousands. Why? Potentially, poor product selection.

Let’s dive in.

Why are my TikTok shop views down?

Lets get housekeeping out of the way first: if you have ANY TikTok shop violations or your health score is above 0 points, it's likely view suppression. It should lift about 1 to 2+ weeks, IF you don't get more violations.

If it's not violations and your health score is 0, it's one of two things:

  1. Bad video

  2. Bad product choice

By bad video, I mean is it worth watching? Is there an attention-grabbing hook that makes a viewer want to keep on watching? Be objective here. If you know the content wasn’t the problem, then it must be the product.

And this isn’t hearsay —- this is straight from the horse's mouth.

Bad product choice is limiting your TikTok shop views

Most UGC creators turned TikTok shop affiliates are not aware of just how crucial product selection can be. I've seen creators selecting products based purely on popularity, what they would buy themselves, what they've seen other people push, or their own personal preferences.

But you need to understand two very important things:

  • Affiliates will be given the performance ratings of the product AND Sellers they are affiliated with. You are what you eat: meaning you’re given a Product Selection Score (PSS) based on this.

  • TikTok has stated in their policy that their algorithm system favors videos promoting highly rated products and sellers.

What is a Product Selection Score?

Your Product Selection Score (PSS) is a 5-point system for creators, ranging from 0 (poor) to 5 (excellent). It evaluates creators' selection of shops and products to promote.

It’s worked out by combining the seller rating, the product rating and the order volume you generate. (You’ll only be able to see it if you’ve generated a minimum of 30 delivered customer orders in one product category in the last 90 calendar days.)

Choose a bad product, or even worse, a bad seller, and you’re in the dog house.

So, what does this mean for my views?

Straight from the horse's mouth, TikTok say that ‘Product Selection Score (PSS) may impact the visibility of your content.’ They’ve also said that if your PSS falls to below 2, you won’t be able to enter creator campaigns.

So, you listen to them.

Ultimately, TikTok recommends that when selecting shops and products to promote, they should be looking for shops with a Shop Performance Score above 4.5 and products with above 4.5 Rating that are highly rated in their product categories.

The next time you’re asking yourself why your video is low in views, run through the checklist in your head:

  • Is my account clear of any violations?

  • Is my product rated 4.5 or above?

  • Does the shop have a performance score above 4.5?

  • Is my video any good?

If the first three are ticked, then it’s back to the drawing board on the video.
